HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team returned to the Centennial Conference Tournament in 2017 and has made the conference playoffs during eight of the past nine seasons. The 2018 season will see head coach Andrew Cohn take over the Fords as they look for a return to postseason action.
There will be eight chances for fans to catch the Fords on the Bettye Marshall Tennis Courts this spring. The 2018 schedule is also highlighted by the team's annual trip to Florida during the College's week of Spring Break in early march.
Outside of the Florida trip, the Fords will host all of the currently scheduled non-conference matches on their home courts. The season starts with New York University (Mar. 3) and Salisbury (Mar. 10) coming to Haverford in successive weekends. NYU beat the Fords last spring but Haverford had won the two previous meetings in 2013 and 2014. Salisbury will meet Haverford for the first time in three seasons, with the Fords last having a win against the Sea Gulls during the 2012 campaign. Another tough opponent, TCNJ (Mar. 28), has had historical success against the Fords but it was Haverford who won the last meeting between these teams when they met in 2014.
Currently scheduled matches during the team's trip to Florida are Augustana (S.D.) (Mar. 12), Schreiner (Mar. 13), and Mount Holyoke (Mar. 15). Those three matches will all be the first-ever meetings in school history between these programs.
Home Centennial Conference matches include meetings with McDaniel (Mar. 24), Washington College (Apr. 4), Johns Hopkins (Apr. 14), Bryn Mawr (Apr. 18), and Dickinson (Apr. 21). The meeting with WAC will be rematch of the Centennial Conference first round match taken by the Fords during the 2017 season. Haverford is 15-14 all-time in an extremely competitive series with the Shorewomen. Another home date of note, Johns Hopkins enters the year as the defending Centennial Conference Champions. Haverford was a 6-3 winner over Dickinson last year and is 14-10 in that all-time series. The Fords have won 17 straight against McDaniel and are 35-1 all-time against Bryn Mawr with a perfect 19-0 record on their home courts.
Road trips around the conference will include Muhlenberg (Mar. 27), Franklin & Marshall (Apr. 7), Ursinus (Apr. 10), Swarthmore (Apr. 25), and Gettysburg (Apr. 28). Swarthmore and F&M were both playoff teams last year. The Fords will be looking for their first win against the Diplomats since the 2014 season when that win punched their first-ever appearance to the Centennial Conference Championship match. Haverford's most recent victory over Swarthmore came that following spring. The Fords have won six straight over Muhlenberg, are 35-2 all-time against Ursinus, and have won 10 straight against Gettysburg.
Women's tennis finished last season with an overall record of 10-8, including a 7-3 record in Centennial Conference matches. The Fords earned three wins against regionally-ranked teams last spring and return four of their starting players from both the singles and doubles lineups for the 2018 spring season.
