HOBOKEN, N.J. – This past Saturday, the Haverford College men's fencing team traveled to Stevens Institute of Technology for regular conference play in the MACFA "A" v "B" group competition. The Fords went 3-2 on the day with victories against Hunter College, Yeshiva, and The College of New Jersey. Haverford's setbacks came against Division I NJIT and the host Ducks.
Opening the first round against the defending MACFA silver medalists, NJIT, Haverford closely contested each of the three weapon classifications. The two closest scores were 5-4 advantages for NJIT in both epee and foil. Haverford's sabrists claimed three of the nine bouts contested in that weapon during the team's 16-11 defeat.
Haverford quickly rebounded in the second round with a convincing 26-1 victory against Hunter College. That win was highlighted by perfect 9-0 records from Haverford's epee and foil squads. A 1-1 record to start competition set up the match of the day. Taking on the host Ducks, bouts that could very well be a preview of the MACFA Bronze Medal match, Haverford was victorious in epee as it won six of those nine bouts. However, wins from Stevens in both foil and sabre led the Ducks to an 18-9 win.
The Fords wrapped up the tournament with victories over Yeshiva and TCNJ. Haverford's sabre won both weapons in those final two matchups by identical 7-2 scores. Epee came away an 8-1 victor against Yeshiva, while the foil squad went unblemished in its final bouts of the day against TCNJ.
Men's fencing will return home for its Alumni Match & Banquet this Saturday. Fencing gets underway at 11 a.m. with the banquet to follow at 1 p.m. The Fords will also be in action at the rescheduled Philadelphia Invitational that is now set for Sunday, February 21 at the University of Pennsylvania.
