HAVERFORD, Pa. - A 1-0 Centennial Conference victory by host Haverford College over visiting Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon at Walton Field clinched a playoff spot for the Fords in the conference's women's soccer playoffs.
Forward Meg Boyer scored the lone goal of the game (video), providing Haverford (9-2-5, 6-0-3 CC) with the winning margin over the Garnet (7-5-2, 2-4-2). Boyer's marker was her fifth in the past four games with each goal entering the books as the game-winner.
Saturday's victory also stretched the Fords' unbeaten string to 13 in a row.
Though low scoring, the game wasn't without drama as Swarthmore hit the post, twice, once in the first half and late in the second after Boyer's goal in the 75th minute.
The Garnet's Ellen Bachmannhuff hit the post at the 36:40 mark with the ball bouncing out to teammate Megan Brock who squared up to the goal and fired off a point blank shot that was saved by Haverford net minder Robin Chernow.
Bachmannhuff added her second post of the game in the 82nd minute but the ensuing shot by a teammate from in close was nullified by a Swarthmore offsides call. The late scoring chance was Swarthmore's only shot of the second half.
Chernow earned the save registering a pair of saves while recording the shutout, her seventh of the season. Swarthmore's Reba Magier allowed one goal against three saves in taking the loss between the pipes for the visitors.
Saturday's victory assures the Fords of nothing less than a third-place finish within the league standings as the regular season nears its conclusion. The Centennial playoffs commence with a quarterfinal game on Nov. 6, with Haverford earning a bye into the semifinal round which takes place at the site of the regular season champion on Nov. 9.
Haverford closes out its regular season on Saturday with a Senior Day match-up at Walton Field against visiting Ursinus College.
