CLAREMONT, Calif. – Haverford College's men's tennis team nearly pulled off the upset Monday in California as the Fords dropped an oh-so-close 5-4 match to Vassar College in non-conference spring break action.
Haverford (1-1) battled back from a 2-1 deficit to the Brewers (7-2) after doubles play but Vassar rallied with a win in the day's final singles match for the victory.
Ranked 14th in the Atlantic South Region, the Fords used singles wins from Will Garrett at No. 6, Jacob Weisenthal at No. 5 and Kevin Caulfield at No. 1 to pull even with Vassar, the 11th-ranked team in the Northeast Region, with one match to play.
The Brewers' Nick Jasso outlasted Haverford's gritty Andy Dougherty (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) at No. 4 for the match's final point.
Haverford will continue its Far West swing over the break with a Thursday, March 8 non-conference duel against Occidental College, a squad ranked 30th in the March 1 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III poll.
