Coach Rineer receives Chris Jones 'Coach of the Year' award
HORSHAM, Pa- Haverford College head men's soccer coach Shane Rineer received the Chris Jones Coach of the Year Award at the 40th Annual Southeast Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association awards banquet on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Rineer becomes the 28th coach in the SPSCA's history to receive the honor.
Under Rineer's direction in 2011 as interim head coach, the Fords ended the season on a nine game unbeaten streak. The team fell in the Centennial Conference championship in a 1-1 tie which ended in penalty kicks (3-2) to Dickinson College. The final team record read 11-5-2 for Rineer's first season as a collegiate head coach, and his interim tag was removed at the season's conclusion.
"It's quite an honor," said Rineer. "I'm humbled to be mentioned in the same list as the previous coaches who've won the Chris Jones award."
The Chris Jones award is named after the former Villanova University head coach, who served in that position with the Wildcats from 1983 until his untimely death in 1991. Before coaching at the collegiate level, Jones was the first soccer coach at Sun Valley High School and also coached at Strath Haven from 1970-1982. Jones' high school teams reached the PIAA state finals twice and the semifinals four times.
