HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Cape Cod League is considered to be one of the most prestigious amateur baseball leagues in the country. Some former alumni of the league include Buster Posey, Chase Utley and many other current and former Major League Baseball All-Stars. Haverford rising senior Tommy Bergjans is currently playing for the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod League and is believed to be the first Haverford baseball player to accomplish the feat.
Bergjans recently finished his junior campaign at Haverford with a 9-2 record and 1.08 ERA in 74.2 innings. This led to many honors such as D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) naming him to their All-Mid-Atlantic Region first teams and All-American first teams. Bergjans was also tallied as the Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year along with an All-Centennial Conference first team accolade.
The rising senior performed both on the field and in the classroom, making the All-Centennial Academic Honor Roll and Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team in 2014 as well.
Bergjans' banner year was a part of a 2014 season that saw the Fords win the Centennial Conference for the second time in three seasons and pick up their second NCAA Tournament victory behind his season-high 13-strikeout performance in a 3-1 win over Moravian.
As Haverford's all-time leader in strikeouts, the rising senior was signed by the Orleans Firebirds and has appeared in five games (as of July 8th) with 4.50 ERA in six innings. Since giving up three earned runs in his first outing vs. Falmouth (June 15), Bergjans hasn't allowed a run in his last four appearances (June 19-30).
Haverford Baseball head coach Dave Beccaria was happy for Bergjans to get this opportunity to play in the Cape Cod League. "Tommy has proven over the past three years that he's one of the best pitchers in Division III and I'm glad that he has the opportunity to take on the best amateur players in the country," said the 15-year head coach. "With the additional exposure, it will benefit his professional opportunities in the future and solidify his value at the next level."
