HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College's three first-team all-conference baseball players -- Tommy Bergjans, Casey Fox and Alex Hudak -- earned additional postseason honors Monday when the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com released their 2013 Division III Mid-Atlantic all-region teams.
Bergjans, the Centennial Conference pitcher of the year, was named to D3baseball.com's first team, Hudak was voted the second team's designated hitter and third baseman Casey Fox was tabbed for third-team honors.
Fox was named the ABCA region's first team utility player while Bergjans was voted to second-team ABCA honors.
Bergjans led the Haverford staff with a 7-1 record and a 1.81 earned run average which was second-lowest in the conference. Over 64 and two-thirds innings on the hill the sophomore right-hander struck out 89 batters which led the Centennial and set a new single-season mark for the Fords. Bergjans' 18-strikeout performance in a complete-game victory on April 20 against visiting Washington College broke a record (15) he had set during his freshman season. In nine starts this spring he fanned at least 10 batters five times.
Fox led the Fords in most offensive categories in the 2013 season including batting average, slugging percentage, hits, RBIs and extra-base hits. He was second on the team in runs scored and stolen bases and started all 38 games of Haverford's 2013 slate. On the mound for the Fords, Fox registered a 3-0 record in four starts and posted an earned run average of just 1.40 while striking out 18 and walking only five batters over 25.2 innings on the hill.
Hudak started every game for the Fords and trailed only Fox in slugging percentage and RBIs. Hudak was also third on the team in hits and batting average. With a total of 112 RBIs and 153 hits over his career he leaves the program third and fifth, respectively, on its all-time list.
