Fords climb in both baseball polls

HAVERFORD, Pa. – A weekend sweep of St. John Fisher College kept Haverford College's baseball team undefeated and helped lift the Fords in the Division III national rankings released Tuesday, March 26.

The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Collegiate Baseball D-III poll has the Fords (12-0) moving up nine spots to No. 13 with 240 points while the ranking pushes Haverford up into the No. 21 spot with 144 points.

Saturday's 3-0 and 10-9 sweep of the Cardinals came against a squad that had played deep into the 2012 NCAA Mideast Regional before bowing out to eventual national champion Marietta College.

The Fords used solid pitching from Tommy Bergjans and Kevin Goff in the opener to limit Fisher to only four hits and record the combined shutout. In the nightcap, Haverford trailed by a count of 9-4 entering the bottom of the seventh but rallied with a run in that frame, another in the eighth and then four more in the bottom of the ninth to complete the comeback. Luke Frankiw's one-out single to left brought home Alex Hudak and Nick Ott for the final runs in the rally.

Haverford welcomes Wesley College to Kannerstein Field for a non-conference game Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. then travels to play Penn State-Berks on Thursday for another non-league contest. Saturday brings Johns Hopkins University, 17th in the poll and 18th in the ABCA's, to Kannerstein for each team's Centennial Conference opener.
