HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team heads into the 2013 schedule as the reigning Centennial Conference champion and, like with last season, head coach Dave Beccaria is looking for the early-season non-conference slate to prepare his team for the challenging schedule within the league.
Six teams the Fords will face in 2013 participated in, as did Haverford, the NCAA 2012 tournament.
The season-opener Tuesday, March 5 is a road trip to Rowan University which participated in last spring's South Regional. The Fords' first opponent over the spring break trip to Fort Meyers, Fla., is New York Regional participant Skidmore College, with Drew University squaring off against Haverford two days later. Drew was defeated by the Fords at the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Regional.
Soon after returning from the spring trip, Haverford will welcome N.Y. Regional participant St. John Fisher College to Kannerstein Field for a Sat., March 23 doubleheader. The regular-season schedule closes with visits from Alvernia University and Neumann University – teams that joined the Fords in Lakewood, N.J., at the Mid-Atlantic Regional – on back-to-back days.
Included among other quality opponents on the schedule from outside the Centennial will be Moravian College which captured the Landmark Conference regular season title. Up-and-comer Gwynedd-Mercy College is set to play at Kannerstein in the home opener on March 8.
The conference slate begins with perennial Centennial challenger Johns Hopkins University. The Blue Jays come to Kannerstein for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader on March 30. The following week brings a two-game series against Swarthmore College, one of three conference teams sporting new head coaches in 2013.
Gettysburg College gets a visit from the Fords in late April to finish off the Centennial portion of the schedule for Haverford, setting up the regular-season finish at home against Alvernia and Neumann.
