Cross country poll keeps men 2nd, women move up to 21st
NEW ORLEANS – Haverford College's men's and women's cross country teams maintained a presence within the national polls released Wednesday morning by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as the men retained their No. 2 ranking while the women moved up one slot to No. 21.
Haverford's men competed in the non-scoring Main Line Invite on their own Alumni Course last Thursday evening, posting fast times alongside runner from Division I's Villanova University. A quartet of Fords -- Jordan Schilit, Tim Schoch, Eric Arnold and Andrew Sturner -- all broke the 20-minute mark for the Alumni Course and placed within the top 10 of the 85 runners competing. Last season, only three Villanova runners completed the race in under 20 minutes.
The Fords women participated in the Dickinson Long and Short Invite last Saturday morning, finishing third in the combined scoring from the two events. Emily Lipman was the top finisher for Haverford in the 6-kilometer (Long) race helping push the team to a second-place finish. In the 4-K (Short) event, the team ended up fifth overall and was paced by Kathryn Balmer's 11th-place finish.
The two teams will head to Lehigh University's Brooks-Paul Short Run on Friday for their next meet. Several ranked teams are expected to join the Fords at the event including sixth-ranked St. Lawrence on the men's side, and No. 14 Johns Hopkins, No. 15 Nebraska Wesleyan and No. 19 St. Lawrence on the women's side.
