Fords tennis teams pegged for playoffs in preseason poll

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Centennial Conference released its preseason coaches polls for men's and women's tennis Thursday afternoon and both of Haverford College's teams are picked to earn repeat berths in the postseason conference tournaments.

Haverford's men earned one first-place vote and accumulated 67 points in the poll to appear in a tie for second with Swarthmore College. Reigning champion Johns Hopkins University was pegged to repeat at the top with 81 points and the other nine first-place votes.

The women from Haverford were voted fourth with 71 points, one point shy of third-place Dickinson College. Johns Hopkins University, with 100 points and 10 first-place votes, sits atop the women's poll.

Last spring both of Haverford's squads earned postseason spots in the Centennial tournament with each winning a quarterfinal match against Washington College. The Fords advanced into the semifinals where they fell to the eventual men's and women's champions from Johns Hopkins.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has both Haverford teams ranked in its 2013 preseason Atlantic South Region polls. The men are eighth with the women ranked 18th.

In addition to team rankings, the ITA singles and doubles preseason rankings include a trio of Fords.

Senior Kevin Caulfield is ranked 22nd nationally in singles and sixth in the region. The regional doubles list includes Caulfield and senior Danny Himelstein at No. 11.

On the women's side, sophomore Caitlin Gallagher is 20th in the Atlantic South singles rankings.
