Hall of Achievement inducts four new members

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College Department of Athletics inducted four new members Saturday evening into its Thomas Glasser '82 Hall of Achievement.

The banquet and ceremony welcomed Joseph Henry Scattergood 1896, Roger Jones '52, Hunter R. Rawlings III '66 and Tracy Kyger Armesto '93 into the department's hall of fame, named after Glasser and honoring selected alumni for their outstanding achievements in one or more varsity sports.

Saturday's event was kicked off by keynote speaker and 2008 inductee Kevin Foley '83, a close friend of Glasser. Foley regaled the banquet's attendees with stories of the Hall's namesake including Glasser's vision of a hall of fame-type honor for Haverford's most accomplished student-athletes.

Scattergood played football and track and field at Haverford but was most honored for his cricket achievements. Current cricket coach Kamran Khan presented Scattergood's posthumous award.

Jones remains one of Haverford's most honored fencers and continues his association with the program as an ardent fan. Past Haverford fencing coach Jim Murray was on hand to present Jones with his honor.

Rawlings III was an intimidating -- at 6-feet-7-inches tall -- basketball and baseball player for the Fords and was presented by his basketball coach while at Haverford, Ernie Prudente.

Kyger Armesto was also a two-sport athlete for the Fords playing for the field hockey and lacrosse programs. Her first lacrosse coach at Haverford, Deb Gallagher, was Saturday's presenter.

It is fitting that the college's Hall of Achievement is dedicated in Tom Glasser's memory, as he embodied the qualities necessary for inclusion in this select company. Glasser was Haverford's Varsity Cup winner as the outstanding athlete in the Class of 1982 and a gold medal winner in the 4x400-meter relay at the 1981 Maccabiah Games in Israel.
